Red Lobster Restaurants: A Company Overview

The Red Lobster company was founded by Bill Darden in 1968. At the tender age of 19 Darden was seeking to explore and develop his entrepreneurial skills and apparently go things right the first time around. Growing on the success of his first Red Lobster restaurant located in Lakeland, Florida. Interestingly this fist restaurant was not called Red Lobster, but went by a completely different color name: The Green Frog. It was soon decided that the seafood themed restaurant would do better to have an appropriately seafood themed name. Red Lobster was an established seafood restaurant chain by the 1970s.

One of the reasons that Red Lobster was so successful was that there was not yet a seafood themed national chain restaurant yet. Sure there were restaurants that were popular chains that carried seafood of various types, but not one that specialized in seafood.

Red Lobster became the common household name that it still is today during the 1970s, when it led national chain restaurants not only of seafood kinds, but all kinds. CEO Joe Lee says of the 70s, “Our biggest competition back then was the kitchen stove”.

Along with the Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Bahama Breeze restaurants are contained as ‘Darden Restaurants’ in order to provide a more upscale atmosphere I some markets, as well as expand upon the common success of Red Lobster with pseudo Italian cuisine such as that of the Olive Garden.

Red Lobster restaurants continue to change and grow to meet customer standards. From their Lobster Feast to everyday dishes like Alaskan crab and red snapper, Red Lobster is a nice way to celebrate your family by treating everyone to the seafood of their choice.
